 All other peoples prayed to many gods–you remember Isis and Osiris, Baal and Astarte.

所有其他的民族全都向許多的神祈禱——你還記得伊西斯和俄西里斯，巴爾和阿斯塔耳忒吧。

But these herdsmen only prayed to one god, their own special protector and leader.

可是這些牧人只向一個神祈禱，他們自己的特殊的保護者和引導者。

And when they sat beside their camp fires in the evening, and sang songs about their deeds and their battles, they sang of his deeds and his battles.

當晚上他們在篝火邊歌唱他們的事跡和戰(zhàn)斗，那么他們這是在唱他的事跡和戰(zhàn)斗。

Their god, they sang, was better and stronger and more exalted1 than all the gods of the heathen put together.

他們的神，他們這樣唱道：比異教徒們的所有眾多的神都更強大、更好、更崇高。

Indeed, they insisted as the years went by, he was the only god there was.

是的，他們堅信隨著時間的推移，他就是唯一存在的神。

The One and Only God, Creator of heaven and earth, sun and moon, land and river, plant and beast, and of all mankind as well.

這唯一的神，是天和地，太陽和月亮，陸地和河流，植物和動物，還有人類的創(chuàng)造者。

It was he who raged furiously2 against them in the storm, but he never abandoned his people.

是他會在雷雨中可怕地向他們震怒，但是當埃及人壓迫他們以及巴比倫人劫持他們的時候，他終究不會遺棄這個民族。

Not when they were persecuted3 by the Egyptians, nor when they were carried off by the Babylonians.

不是當他們受到埃及人的迫害,也不是當他們被巴比倫人帶走了。

For that was their faith and their pride: they were his people, and he was their God.

因為這是他們的信仰，是他們的驕傲：他們是他的民族，他是他們的神。
