　　Whole generations are growing up addicted to television.Food is left uneaten,homework undone and sleep is lost.Television is a universal pacifier.It is now standard practice for mother to keep the children quiet by putting them in the living room and turning on the set.It doesn't matter that the children watch rubbishy commercials or spectacles of sadism and violence--so long as they are quiet.There is a limit to the amount of creative talent available in the world.Every day, television consumes vast quantities of creative work.That is why most of the programs are so bad; it is impossible to keep pace with the demand and maintain high standards as well.When millions watch the same programs, the whole world becomes a village, and society is reduced to the conditions which obtain in preliterate communities.We become utterly dependent on the two most primitive media of communication: pictures and the spoken word.

　　一代又一代的人在迷戀于電視中長大。飯沒來得及吃，作業(yè)沒來得及做，覺也沒有睡足。電視成了人們慣用的撫慰工具。母親為了不讓孩子們吵鬧，將他們趕到起居室，然后打開電視，這已成了通行的做法。只要孩子們不吵不鬧，他們是看“垃圾”商業(yè)廣告還是施虐和暴力場景，那都無關(guān)緊要了。人世間的創(chuàng)造力是有一定限度的。日復(fù)一日，電視消耗掉大量的創(chuàng)造力。這就是大多數(shù)節(jié)目何以如此糟糕的原因;既滿足需求同時又保持高標(biāo)準(zhǔn)，那是不可能的。當(dāng)數(shù)以百萬計的人觀看著相同的電視節(jié)目的時候，整個世界就變成了一個村落，社會也就退化到文字出現(xiàn)前的狀態(tài)。我們完完全全依賴于兩個最原始的傳播媒介：圖像和口頭語言。
