和朋友聊天，通常我們會(huì)用talk with sb.或是chat with sb.,但是今天的這個(gè)短語(yǔ)很有趣，字面翻譯過(guò)來(lái)就是“吃肥肉”，那么英語(yǔ)中為什么用“吃肥肉”來(lái)表達(dá)聊天的意思呢？先來(lái)看一下這個(gè)短語(yǔ)的起源。

Origin

Chewing the fat is speculated to be something that was done at leisure by the North American Indians. Farmers in Britain would chew on pork fat when sitting idle or chatting with other farmers. It is also speculated to be an activity that sailors would do. They would have hardened and salted animal fat which would provide nutrients when on a voyage but would be required to be chewed for a long time.
據(jù)推測(cè)，咀嚼脂肪是北美印第安人在閑暇時(shí)做的事。英國(guó)農(nóng)民閑坐或和其他農(nóng)民聊天時(shí)都會(huì)嚼豬肉。也有認(rèn)為水手們也會(huì)嚼咸脂肪。用鹽腌制動(dòng)物脂肪會(huì)變硬，這些脂肪在航行時(shí)能提供營(yíng)養(yǎng)，但需要長(zhǎng)時(shí)間咀嚼。
