694　used to和would

① 表示有規(guī)則的習(xí)慣用used to；表示不規(guī)則的習(xí)慣用would，且常同always，often，sometimes，frequently，for hours等連用。

He used to climb the hill on Sundays. 他以前常在星期天爬山。（有規(guī)則的習(xí)慣，星期天去）

He would sometimes climb the hill when he was young. 他年輕時(shí)，有時(shí)候會(huì)去爬山。（不規(guī)則的習(xí)慣，偶爾去而已）

② used to強(qiáng)調(diào)過(guò)去與現(xiàn)在的對(duì)比，含有“過(guò)去是這樣，而現(xiàn)在已不這樣”的意思；would表示的是對(duì)過(guò)去的“回想”，指以前常那樣做，某種過(guò)去的習(xí)慣。

Father used not to be so forgetful. 父親從前是不這么忘事的。（意為“父親過(guò)去不那么忘事，而現(xiàn)在則好忘事”）

He used to play tennis before his marriage. 他結(jié)婚前常打乒乓球。（意為“婚后不打了”）

She would sit at the window for hours，book in hand. 她時(shí)常坐在窗前看書(shū)，一坐就是幾個(gè)小時(shí)。（過(guò)去時(shí)常那樣，過(guò)去的習(xí)慣）

Sometimes he would walk into the hills and enjoyed himself there all day long. 他有時(shí)候會(huì)步行到山里去，一整天都在那里享受山林之樂(lè)。（過(guò)去的反復(fù)行為）

③ used to可接動(dòng)作動(dòng)詞、狀態(tài)動(dòng)詞或意向動(dòng)詞；would只能接動(dòng)作動(dòng)詞，不能接狀態(tài)動(dòng)詞或意向動(dòng)詞。

There used to be a pine tree there.

那兒從前有一棵松樹(shù)。

There would be a pine tree there.

上大學(xué)時(shí)，我時(shí)常洗冷水澡。

When at college，I used to have a cold bath.

When at college，I would like to have a cold bath.

④ 主觀地說(shuō)過(guò)去的事用used to；帶有意志時(shí)用would，常表示“想，喜歡”等意。

He would go his own way in spite of her advice. 他不顧她的勸告，一意孤行。（不可用used to）

有時(shí)候，used to和would也是可以換用的。

When at university，he used to/would get up early. 讀大學(xué)時(shí)，他常常起得早。
