12 THE UNSEEN PLAYMATE	十二瞧不見(jiàn)的游戲伴兒

When children are playing alone on the green,	孩子們獨(dú)自在草地上游玩，
In comes the playmate that never was seen.	瞧不見(jiàn)的伴兒就悄悄來(lái)到身邊。
When children are happy and lonely and good,	孩子們高興，寂寞，又挺乖，
The Friend of the Children comes out of the wood.	"兒童之友"就從樹(shù)林里走出來(lái)。
Nobody heard him and nobody saw,	誰(shuí)也沒(méi)聽(tīng)到他，誰(shuí)也沒(méi)見(jiàn)到他，
His is a picture you never could draw,	他這幅肖像，你永遠(yuǎn)不會(huì)描畫(huà)，
But he's sure to be present, abroad or at home,	可只要孩子們高興，獨(dú)個(gè)兒游戲，
When children are happy and playing alone.	他準(zhǔn)定在這兒，不管在屋外，屋里。
He lies in the laurels, he runs on the grass,	他躺在桂冠里，他奔在草地上，
He sings when you tinkle the musical glass;	你碰響好聽(tīng)的玻璃杯，他就歌唱;
Whene'er you are happy and cannot tell why,	只要你快樂(lè)，又說(shuō)不出理由，
The Firend of the Children is sure to be by !	在你身邊就肯定有"兒童之友"!
He loves to be little, he hates to be big,	他喜歡身子小，他不愛(ài)身子大，
'Tis he that inhabits the caves that you dig;	能在你挖的洞子里住下的，正是他，
'Tis he when you play with your soldiers of tin	你讓錫制的玩具兵上戰(zhàn)場(chǎng)，
That sides with the Frenchmen and never can win	也是他：總站在法國(guó)人一邊，吃敗仗。
Tis he, when at night you go off to your bed,	夜里，當(dāng)上床的時(shí)候來(lái)到，
Bids you go to your sleep and not trouble your head;	那是他：不再打攪你，叫你去睡覺(jué);
For wherever they're lying, in cupboard or shelf,	你的玩具，不管在櫥里躺、架上站，
'Tis he will take care of your playthings himself !	那是他：會(huì)照料好每一樣，每一件。
