HENRY, THE BOOTBLACK
擦鞋童亨利
Henry was a kind, good boy. His father was dead, and his mother was very poor.
亨利是個(gè)善良的好孩子。他的爸爸死了,媽媽也很窮,
He had a little sister about two years old.
還有一個(gè)兩歲大的小妹妹。
He wanted to help his mother, for she could not always earn enough to buy food for her little family.
他想幫助母親,她時(shí)常賺不到足夠的錢來為她的小家庭購買食物。
One day, a man gave him a dollar for finding a pocketbook which he had lost.
一天,一個(gè)人給了他一元錢,因?yàn)樗麕椭莻€(gè)人找到了丟失的錢包。
Henry might have kept all the money, for no one saw him when he found it.
亨利本可以拿走所有的錢,因?yàn)闆]有人看見他撿到錢包。
But his mother had taught him to be honest, and never to keep what did not belong to him.
但他媽媽告訴過他要為人誠實(shí),不能拿不屬于自己的東西。
With the dollar he bought a box, three brushes, and some blacking.
他用那一塊錢買了一個(gè)盒子、三個(gè)刷子和一些黑鞋油。
He then went to the corner of the street, and said to every one whose boots did not look nice, "Black your boots,sir, please?"
然后走到街角,對每個(gè)靴子看起來不漂亮的人說:“先生,求求您,讓我為您擦鞋,好嗎?”
He was so polite that gentlemen soon began to notice him, and to let him black their boots.
他很有禮貌,人們很快就開始注意到他,讓他給他們擦皮鞋。
The first day he brought home fifty cents, which he gave to his mother to buy foodwith.
第一天,他把五毛錢帶回了家,讓媽媽用這些錢去買吃的。
When he gave her the money, she said, as she dropped a tear of joy, "You are a dear, good boy, Henry.
當(dāng)他把錢交給媽媽時(shí),媽媽流下了高興的眼淚:“亨利,你是一個(gè)可愛的好孩子。
I did not know how I could earn enough to buy bread with, but now I think we can manage to get along quite well, ”
我不知道怎么賺足夠的錢買面包,但我覺得現(xiàn)在我們可以很容易地買到了。”
Henry worked all the day, and went to school in the evening.
亨利要干一整天的活,晚上去學(xué)校上課。
He earned almost enough to support his mother and his little sister.
他賺的錢幾乎足夠用來供養(yǎng)媽媽和小妹妹。
