Under a spreading chestnut tree

樹(shù)冠伸展的栗樹(shù)下，

The village smithy stands;

坐落著一間鐵匠鋪，

The smith, a mighty man is he,

身材健壯的鐵匠，

With large and sinewy hands;

寬厚有力的雙手，

And the muscles of his brawny arms

褐色臂膀的肌肉，

Are strong as iron bands.

堅(jiān)實(shí)得好像鐵杵。

His hair is CRIsp, and black, and long,

他頭發(fā)蜷曲又黑又長(zhǎng)，

His face is like the tan;

長(zhǎng)有一副棕褐色臉膛，

His brow is wet with honest sweat,

眉尖上滴落辛勤的汗水，

He earns whate'er he can,

無(wú)需仰人鼻息鍛造自強(qiáng)。

And looks the whole world in the face,

他腁手砥足養(yǎng)家糊口，

For he owes not any man.

神情堅(jiān)毅，活在這個(gè)世上。

Week in, week out, from morn till night,

從早到晚，筋疲力盡，

You can hear his bellows blow;

吶喊，吼叫，力抵萬(wàn)金，

You can hear him swing his heavy sledge,

他身影晃動(dòng)，鐵錘哐當(dāng)，

With measured beat and slow,

那聲聲敲打，緩慢沉重，

Like a sexton ringing the village bell,

宛如教堂鐘聲，回響在

When the evening sun is low.

夜幕將至的血色夕陽(yáng)。

And children coming home from school

孩子們放學(xué)回家路上，

Look in at the open door;

走過(guò)門(mén)前高大栗樹(shù)，朝里張望，

They love to see the flaming forge,

他們喜歡看燒紅的鍛鐵，

And hear the bellows roar,

火苗呼嘯，吼聲震天，

And catch the burning sparks that fly like chaff from a threshing floor.
