Some people had their hay days when they were young, maybe in college or high school. They consider themselves past their prime. They might talk about those past experiences only and not plan for new experiences in the future. These people might be stuck in their glory days.
有些人年輕時(shí)就有過(guò)他們的hay day,可能是在大學(xué)或高中時(shí)期。他們認(rèn)為自己已經(jīng)過(guò)了巔峰時(shí)期。他們可能只會(huì)談?wù)撃切┻^(guò)去的經(jīng)歷,而不計(jì)劃未來(lái)的新經(jīng)歷。這些人可能還沉浸在他們的輝煌歲月中。
Other things besides people can have a hay day. If you are at the Pinnacle of success, you could say your career is having a hay day. Also, a place like a city can have a hay day, and so can an industry.
除了人之外,其他事物也可以有hay day。如果你正處于成功的巔峰,你可以說(shuō)你的事業(yè)正處于hay day。同樣,像城市這樣的地方也可以有hay day,行業(yè)也是如此。
For example, I grew up in the Rust Belt of West Virginia. In its hay day, my home town was known for its steel industry. In fact, every man in my family worked in the steel Mills. But when the industry shrank, the steel factory jobs disappeared. The city fell on hard times, and today is still trying to recover.
例如,我在西弗吉尼亞州的鐵銹地帶長(zhǎng)大。在它的hay day,我的家鄉(xiāng)以其鋼鐵工業(yè)而聞名。事實(shí)上,我家里的每個(gè)男人都在鋼鐵廠(chǎng)工作。但當(dāng)這個(gè)行業(yè)萎縮時(shí),鋼鐵廠(chǎng)的工作崗位消失了。這座城市陷入了困境,今天仍在努力恢復(fù)。
However, many other parts of West Virginia are having a tourism hay day because of the beautiful natural environment.
然而,西弗吉尼亞州的許多其他地區(qū)正因?yàn)槊利惖淖匀画h(huán)境而迎來(lái)旅游業(yè)的hay day。
So where does the word hay day come from? Some word experts say that it first appeared in English in the 16th century as an interjection. An interjection is a word or cry, such as "ouch," that expresses a sudden or strong feeling. So Hay Day was used to express extreme happiness or wonder.
那么這個(gè)詞“hay day”是從哪里來(lái)的呢?一些詞匯專(zhuān)家說(shuō),它最初作為感嘆詞出現(xiàn)在16世紀(jì)的英語(yǔ)中。感嘆詞是一個(gè)詞或呼喊聲,如“哎喲”,表達(dá)突然或強(qiáng)烈的感情。所以Hay Day被用來(lái)表達(dá)極端的快樂(lè)或驚奇。
Around the same time, hay day was also used as a noun, meaning high spirits.
大約在同一時(shí)期,hay day也被用作名詞,意思是高昂的情緒。
The Miriam Webster online dictionary says it was not until the 18th century that the word was used to mean the period when one's achievement or popularity has reached its zenith.
《韋氏在線(xiàn)詞典》說(shuō),直到18世紀(jì),這個(gè)詞才被用來(lái)指一個(gè)人的成就或知名度達(dá)到頂峰的時(shí)期。
Usually, we use hay day in the singular form. Saying the plural hay days is a little less common.
通常,我們用單數(shù)形式hay day。說(shuō)復(fù)數(shù)hay days的情況比較少見(jiàn)。
