33．Trees
In the Garden of Eden(1), planted by God,
There were goodly trees in the springing sod-
Trees of beauty and height and grace,
To stand in splendor before His face:
Apple and hickory, ash and pear,
Oak and beech, and the tulip rare,
The trembling aspen, the noble pine,
The sweeping elm by the river line;
Trees for the birds to build and sing,
And the lilac tree for a joy in spring;
Trees to turn at the frosty call
And carpet the ground for their Lord's footfall;
Trees for fruitage and fire and shade,
Trees for the cunning builder's trade;
Wood for the bow, the spear, and the flail,
The keel and the mast of the daring sail-
He made them of every grain and girth(2)
For the use of man in the
Then lest the soul should not lift her eyes
From the gift to the Giver of Paradise,
On the crown of a hill, for all to see,
God planted a scarlet maple tree.(3)

(1)the Garden of Eden：伊甸園，《圣經(jīng)》中人類(lèi)始祖亞當(dāng)與夏娃居住的
地方。這里喻作樂(lè)園，與最后一節(jié)中的 Garden of Earth 相呼應(yīng)。
(2)of every grain and girth：是動(dòng)詞 made 的賓語(yǔ)補(bǔ)足語(yǔ)。grain 的本義
為"紋理"，girth 的本義為"(樹(shù)圍的)周長(zhǎng)"，這里用來(lái)表示各種樹(shù)的木質(zhì)和粗細(xì)
不一，因而適宜于各種用途。
(3)Then lest．．．maple tree：這四行構(gòu)成一個(gè)主從復(fù)合句，god 為主句
的主語(yǔ)，planted a scarlet maple tree 是謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞及其直接賓語(yǔ)。lest the soul
should not lift her eyes from the gift to the Giver Of paradise 是帶否
定意義的目的狀語(yǔ)從句，lest 含有"以防"和"以免"的意思，這種從句中的謂語(yǔ)
動(dòng)詞一般與 should 連用。
