Training Focus:

Identifying numbers with eight to ten digits

Directions: This drill is for practice in recognizing numbers with more than eight digits. Listen carefully. Write down the numbers as rapidly as you can.

Key:

1. The country with the largest population in the world is China. According to the 1982 census, the total population was 1,031,882,511.

2. India is the country with the second largest population. Its population estimated in 1979 reached 667,326,000.

3. Which country is the third largest in population ?It's the U.S.S.R. Its 1979 census showed it had a population of 262,436,000.

4. The fourth in line is the U.S.A., with an estimated population of 223,889,000 in 1980.

5. Indonesia ranks the fifth in its population. There the population was 148,085,000 in 1979.

6. The next largest country in population is Brazil. The estimated population was 119,175,000 in 1979.

7. The seventh largest country in population is Japan. It listed a population of 115,880,000 in 1979.

8. The eighth? Bangladesh. According to statistics, its population was 88,092,000 in 1979.

9. Next comes Pakistan, with a population of 84,075,000 in 1979.

10. And last, the tenth largest is Nigeria in Africa, with its estimated population of 74,595,000 in 1979.

News Item 1

Peking

The Chinese News Agency says China's population has grown to 1,031,000,000 persons. This number includes the people on Hongkong, Taiwan and Macao. The reports said there has been a 45％ */increase in the Chinese population since the last count was made in 1964. But the news agency said that strong birth control measures have been successful. It said there are now only 15 babies born for every 1,000 persons. Four years ago about 28 babies were born in China for every 1,000 persons.

News Item 2

In Beijing, China says it will pay back a five-hundred-million-dollar loan to the International Monetary Fund one year earlier than planned. The Chinese News Agency said the government would begin repaying the loan on Friday. Experts said that China is able to repay the loan now because its economy has improved.

American scientists say they believe trees can warn each other of danger by releasing chemicals into the air. The theory announced by the National Science Foundation is the result of studies carried out by scientists in the states of Washington and New Hampshire.

The scientists said they found that when trees are under attack by disease or insects, nearby trees take the same defensive actions as the trees being attacked. And they said it appears that the trees being attacked may produce and send out chemicals to warn the other trees.
