The Light We Carry, published in November 2022, is a collection of Obama’s experiences as a political figure, a mother, a spouse and a woman in the world.
Half a memoir and half a self-help book, Obama’s nonfiction project arose from the world’s ongoing political unrest and uncertainty in face of the COVID-19 pandemic. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE before the book’s release, she shared her coping mechanisms and lessons gleaned from reflecting on her life during the anxious years of 2020-2021.
“These are the things I say to myself when I need to pick myself up,” she told PEOPLE. “This is how I stay visible in a world that doesn't necessarily see a tall Black woman. This is how I stay armored up when I'm attacked. The book is that offering.
Obama previously won a Grammy in 2020 for the audiobook of her first memoir, Becoming. Although she wasn’t present to accept the award, presenter Esperanza Spalding said she would “gladly accept on her behalf.”
With her win for The Light We Carry, she ties her Grammy count with husband and former President Barack Obama, who also has two awards in the spoken word category.
