暮光之城?暮色 第26期:打開的書(7)
午飯剩下來的時間，我都非常小心地把目光一直放在自己桌上。我決定尊重我跟自己達(dá)成的那個協(xié)議。既然他看上去不生氣，我就去上生物學(xué)。一想到又要坐到他的旁邊，我的胃，的的確確可怕地翻騰了幾下。
I didn't really want to walk to class with Mike as usual — he seemed to be a popular target for the snowball snipers — but when we went to the door, everyone besides me groaned in unison. It was raining, washing all traces of the snow away in clear,icy ribbons down the side of the walkway. I pulled my hood up, secretly pleased. I would be free to go straight home after Gym.
我并不想像往常那樣跟邁克一起去上課——他似乎是雪球狙擊手們喜歡的目標(biāo)——不過我們走到門口時，除了我以外，大家都不約而同地唉聲嘆氣。天下雨了，把所有的積雪都沖刷一空，像一根明凈、冰冷的緞帶似的順著人行道流走了。我把帽兜拉了上來，心中竊喜。下了體育課，我可以直接回家去嘍。
Mike kept up a string of complaints on the way to building four.
邁克在去4號樓的路上一直抱怨個沒完。
Once inside the classroom, I saw with relief that my table was still empty. Mr. Banner was walking around the room,distributing one microscope and box of slides to each table. Class didn't start for a few minutes, and the room buzzed with conversation. I kept my eyes away from the door, doodling idly on the cover of my notebook.
進(jìn)了教室后，我看見我的桌子還空著，舒了一口氣。班納先生正在教室里來回走動，在給每張桌子發(fā)一個顯微鏡和一盒玻璃片。課還沒開始上，還要過幾分鐘，教室里嗡聲一片。我克制著不往門口的方向看，漫不經(jīng)心地在筆記本的封面上亂涂一氣。
I heard very clearly when the chair next to me moved, but my eyes stayed carefully focusedon the pattern I was drawing.
旁邊的椅子挪動時，我聽得非常真切，但我的目光依舊小心地集中在手頭正在畫的圖案上。
"Hello," said a quiet, musical voice.
"你好，"一個輕輕的、悅耳的聲音說道。
I looked up, stunned that he was speaking to me. He was sitting as far away from me as the desk allowed, but his chair was angled toward me. His hair was dripping wet, disheveled — even so, he looked like he'd just finished shooting a commercial for hair gel. His dazzling face was friendly, open, a slight smile on his flawless lips. But his eyes were careful.
我抬起了頭，驚呆了，他在跟我說話。他坐得離我遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)的，只差沒坐到桌子外邊去了，不過他椅子的一角沖著我。他的頭發(fā)濕得滴水，凌亂得很——即使這樣，他看上去也像剛剛拍完發(fā)膠廣告似的。他那張光彩奪目的臉，友好而又單純，完美無瑕的兩片嘴唇上掛著一絲淡淡的笑意。不過他的目光里卻充滿了謹(jǐn)慎。
"My name is Edward Cullen," he continued. "I didn't have a chance to introduce myself last week. You must be Bella Swan."
"我叫愛德華·卡倫，"他繼續(xù)說道，"上個星期沒機(jī)會向你作自我介紹。你肯定是貝拉·斯旺。"
My mind was spinning with confusion. Had I made up the whole thing? He was perfectly polite now. I had to speak; he was waiting. But I couldn't think of anything conventional to say.
我有點(diǎn)暈頭轉(zhuǎn)向了。難道整個這件事都是我憑空想出來的?此刻，他是禮貌得沒法說了。我得說話;他在等待。但是我想不出任何的客套話。
"H-how do you know my name?" I stammered.
"你——你是怎么知道我的名字的?"我結(jié)結(jié)巴巴地說道。
He laughed a soft, enchanting laugh.
他露出一個溫柔而又迷人的笑容。
"Oh, I think everyone knows your name. The whole town's been waiting for you to arrive."
"噢，我想每個人都知道你的名字。全鎮(zhèn)的人都在盼著你的到來。"
I grimaced. I knew it was something like that.
我做了個鬼臉。我知道事實(shí)也差不多是這樣子。
"No," I persisted stupidly. "I meant, why did you call me Bella?"
"不，"我傻傻地追問，"我的意思是說，你怎么叫我貝拉?"
He seemed confused. "Do you prefer Isabella?"
他似乎被我問蒙了："你喜歡叫你伊薩貝拉?"
"No, I like Bella," I said. "But I think Charlie — I mean my dad — must call me Isabella behind my back — that's what everyone here seems to know me as," I tried to explain, feeling like an utter moron.

"Oh." He let it drop. I looked away awkwardly.

Thankfully, Mr. Banner started class at that moment. I tried to concentrate as he explained the lab we would be doing today.The slides in the box were out of order. Working as lab partners, we had to separate the slides of onion root tip cells into the phases of mitosis they represented and label them accordingly. We weren't supposed to use our books. In twentyminutes, he would be coming around to see who had it right.

"Get started," he commanded.
