He soon made a name for himself and came to be known to the Italians as Giovanni Acuto.

　　語言點(diǎn)1:句子結(jié)構(gòu)分析:as long ago as the forteenth century作時(shí)間狀語，強(qiáng)調(diào)是發(fā)生在很久以前的事情。Sir John Hawkwood是an Englishman的同位語，起解釋說明的作用。That引導(dǎo)同位語從句，解釋說明discovery的具體作用。

　　語言點(diǎn)2:as long ago as的意思是“追溯到”，相當(dāng)于date from,date back to,trace back to。
