I say, guy, shall we bake a cake?

It's a fruit one? Not half!

It's important to explain how we've come about this recipe,

and this is absolutely dead true.

I was in Ulverston,

I was standing at the deli counter,

and this lady came up to me and said,

"Try that, it's great,"

and handed me a recipe.

And presumably, it came from her mother, or somebody's mother.

And so, being us, we did try it and now it's on the telly.

It's a brilliant recipe.

It's very, very, very good.

Now, being a sticky date cake,

做棗糕

it's got sticky dates, sultanas,

一定要有棗子，小葡萄干

raisins, raisins amazings! Currants.

美味的葡萄干，還有黑醋栗

Give them a whizz.

This is actually boiled in, well, water...

要用水煮

..and a real good old-fashioned ingredient, condensed milk. Oh!

還有傳統(tǒng)的食材煉乳。噢!

This is what struck us about the recipe, you know, it's brilliant fun.

Dude! Condensed milk is the things that dreams are made of.

It is, but you can imagine,

this with the dates,

we're looking at a proper sticky cake.

Now, to this watery,

fruity, condensed milky mixture,

put in a heap of butter.

You can tell it's a northern recipe, this, good solid butter.

But it's the way she handed me the recipe,

So this has to simmer for three minutes,

then left to cool completely,

and you'll have this wonderful milky, fruity mixture.

While it cools,

we mix the wholemeal flour, plain flour and baking soda.

Then the mixtures are combined.

a good old-fashioned one. Yeah.

In fact, it pays to double-line it.

This just protects it a little bit from scorching.

Top tip here,

just use a bit of butter in-between the sheets,

it helps them stay in place.
