He was going on with some wild reminiscences about his tomahawk-pipe which, it seemed, had in its two uses both brained his foes and soothed his soul,

他是在對(duì)他那煙斗斧發(fā)狂思,那東西,在我們直接注意這個(gè)熟睡的索匠的時(shí)候,好象就有兩種用處,既可以砍掉他的敵人的腦袋,又可以慰藉他的精神。

when we were directly attracted to the sleeping rigger. The strong vapor now completely filling the contracted hole,it began to tell upon him.

這時(shí),這個(gè)狹小的洞穴里全都彌漫著濃烈的煙霧,煙霧開(kāi)始對(duì)那個(gè)睡覺(jué)的人發(fā)生作用了。

He breathed with a sort of muffledness; then seemed troubled in the nose; then revolved over once or twice; then sat up and rubbed his eyes.

他發(fā)出一種咕噥咕噥的聲響;好象鼻子里也很難受似的:于是他翻了兩三回身,坐了起來(lái),揉揉眼睛。

Holloa! he breathed at last, who be ye smokers?

喂!他終于開(kāi)口了,你們這些吸煙的是誰(shuí)呀?

Shipped men, answered I, when does she sail?

做水手的呀,我說(shuō),船什么時(shí)候開(kāi)呀?

Aye, aye, ye are going in her, be ye? She sails to-day. The Captain came aboard last night.

啊,啊,你們要在這條船上啦,是嗎?它今天就開(kāi)。船長(zhǎng)昨天晚上已經(jīng)上船了。

What Captain?Ahab?

哪個(gè)船長(zhǎng)?亞哈?

Who but him indeed?

除了他,還有誰(shuí)?

I was going to ask him some further questions concerning Ahab, when we heard a noise on deck.

我正想再問(wèn)他一些關(guān)于亞哈的事情時(shí),卻聽(tīng)到了甲板上一陣聲音。

Holloa! Starbuck's astir, said the rigger. He's a lively chief mate that; good man, and a pious; but all alive now, I must turn to.

喂!斯達(dá)巴克起床啦,那索匠說(shuō)。他是個(gè)生龍活虎的大副;是好人,也是一個(gè)虔誠(chéng)的人;啊,現(xiàn)在大家都在忙著,我也得干活去了。

And so saying he went on deck, and we followed.

這樣說(shuō)過(guò)后,他就上了甲板,我們也跟著他走了。

It was now clear sunrise. Soon the crew came on board in twos and threes; the riggers bestirred themselves; the mates were actively engaged;

這時(shí)已是太陽(yáng)高照了。不久就有三三兩兩的水手上船來(lái);索匠們都在用勁大忙起來(lái);大二三副也很忙;

and several of the shore people were busy in bringing various last things on board. Meanwhile Captain Ahab remained invisibly enshrined within his cabin.

幾個(gè)岸上的人正在忙著把各種最后的東西搬上船來(lái)。這時(shí)候,亞哈船長(zhǎng)仍然形影不見(jiàn),深藏在他的船長(zhǎng)室里。
