He's dead, Mr. Stubb, said Daggoo.

Yes; both pipes smoked out! and withdrawing his own from his mouth, Stubb scattered the dead ashes over the water; and, for a moment, stood thoughtfully eyeing the vast corpse he had made.

第六十二章 投槍
A word concerning an incident in the last chapter.
這里先說一說上一章的一段插曲。
According to the invariable usage of the fishery, the whale-boat pushes off from the ship, with the headsman or whale-killer as temporary steersman, and the harpooneer or whale-fastener pulling the foremost oar, the one known as the harpooneer-oar. Now it needs a strong, nervous arm to strike the first iron into the fish; for often, in what is called a long dart, the heavy implement has to be flung to the distance of twenty or thirty feet. But however prolonged and exhausting the chase, the harpooneer is expected to pull his oar meanwhile to the uttermost; indeed, he is expected to set an example of superhuman activity to the rest, not only by incredible rowing, but by repeated loud and intrepid exclamations;
按照捕鯨業(yè)的不變的習(xí)慣，捕鯨小艇從大船上劃出去后，臨時(shí)的舵手就是那個(gè)指揮者或者叫做打鯨者，而扳前槳的，也就是稱為標(biāo)槍槳手的，就是標(biāo)槍手或者叫做縛鯨者。這時(shí)，為了要對(duì)那條鯨投出第一槍，是必需有只結(jié)實(shí)有力的胳膊；因?yàn)?，在一般稱為“長(zhǎng)投”中，往往得把那支重家伙投個(gè)二三十英尺遠(yuǎn)。而且，不管追擊得多久，有多疲累，人們還同時(shí)希望那個(gè)標(biāo)槍手會(huì)盡力扳槳；事實(shí)上，人們都希望他會(huì)給其余的人樹立一個(gè)具有超人的活動(dòng)力的榜樣：他不但要超常的劃槳，而且還要反復(fù)發(fā)出聲大無比的呼喊。
