The US Treasury issued sanctions against 28 vessels, 27 companies and one individual across nine jurisdictions, including China, Singapore and Tanzania, on Friday. Officials said those sanctioned had exported coal or made ship-to-ship transfers in violation of existing UN Security Council sanctions and often via deception.

Photographs issued by the Treasury show what purports to be a Chinese general cargo vessel and which the US says is a North Korean tanker. The US says North Korea falsified shipping information by marking the tanker with the identification number of another vessel that was in China at the same time.

US persons are prohibited from dealing with any of the parties sanctioned. “The president has made it clear to companies worldwide that if they choose to help fund North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, they will not do business with the United States,” said Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin.
