Larry Kudlow, a free trade advocate and tax cutter who relishes the media spotlight, is to be appointed by President Donald Trump as his new chief economic adviser.

Mr Kudlow, a CNBC commentator and long-time associate of Mr Trump, told the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday he had accepted the job as head of the White House National Economic Council.

e will replace Gary Cohn, the former Goldman Sachs president, who is stepping down after clashing with the president over his decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports.

Mr Kudlow’s appointment will bring to the White House a former Wall Street economist-turned-talking head who has views that align with the president’s in some areas and clash in others.

He is a supporter of free trade who has been critical of Mr Trump’s approach to tariffs, but he has backed the president on deregulation and tax cuts.

Once a member of President Ronald Reagan’s economic team, his support for aggressive supply side tax-cutting is longstanding.

Recounting a conversation with Mr Trump, Mr Kudlow told the Wall Street Journal: “He said to me several times, ‘I believe in global trade. I regard myself as a global trader, but it has to be fair trade to protect America’.”

Mr Kudlow said he agreed with the sentiment. “I personally hope widespread tariff use — it doesn’t come to that. But in some cases, it will.”

A White House spokeswoman said there were “no personnel announcements at this time”.

Mr Kudlow grew up in suburban New Jersey in a family that owned a textile business. He went on to become chief economist at the Wall Street firms Paine Webber and Bear Stearns.
