South Carolina hiker dies after plunging down 100-foot waterfall
A South Carolina man died after falling off a waterfall in North Carolina as fellow hikers looked on, authorities and witnesses said.
Aaron Post, 28, of Charleston, died from his injuries sustained after falling early Saturday from near the top of Big Bradley Falls, a 100-foot waterfall in Polk County, WLOS reported.
“I turned around and I just watched him slide down the waterfall,” Post’s friend George Hugg told the station.
Post was airlifted out of the rugged, rural area as more than 50 rescuers responded to the scene, including some who rappelled down to the base of the waterfall, which is known to be a “dangerous area” where several people have previously died, according to NCWaterfalls.com.
Post, who was in critical condition when he arrived at a hospital Saturday, later died from his injuries, authorities told WLOS on Sunday as rescuers shared condolences on social media.
“Although the outcome is not what anyone wants, everyone worked together as a team to make sure this patient had the best care and extraction they could,” the Henderson County Rescue Squad posted on Facebook. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends during this difficult time.”
“Hike at your own risk – the trail is primitive and requires crossing the stream,” the website reads. “Proper hiking shoes required. The trail is especially dangerous at the top of the falls.”
